An early work by Monticelli, executed in 1860, had been offered in 1901 on auction in Paris, of works from the Zygomalas' collection from Marseille. In 1908 the painting, whose contemporary owner was M. L. Monticelli, was to be seen in the Monticelli's retrospective in Paris. In Wrocław the painting was exhibited for the first time in 1917, in the Möller's Gallery. It's highly probable that just there it was purchased by Carl Sachs. The portrait was among the artworks sequestreated in 1940. Since then it has been regarded missing.
