The painting was probably acquired by Gustav Adolf von Ingenheim during his journeys to Italy. It wasn't included in the inventories of the collection. In 1920s the portrait was offered to the art delaers Duveen Brothers by Manfred von Ingenheim. Bernard Berenson was asked to provide an expertise on the painting and recived its photograph in autumn 1926. On the backside of the photograph there is a note "ex Ingenheim", that could mean that family succeded in parting with the painting.
